RAM-RAIDERS have smashed their way into two local businesses in recent days. Police were alerted to the ram-raid-style burglary of Henry’s Liquor store on Yaldhurst Rd at about 2.20am yesterday. The offenders, driving a silver Nissan Primera, reversed through the glass front doors into the store, leaving the car running. Two people got out of the Nissan, took alcohol and removed it from the store. A second vehicle, a dark-coloured sedan, pulled up into the forecourt and the alcohol was loaded into it. Three offenders left the scene in the dark-coloured sedan heading east along Yaldhurst Rd. When police arrived at the scene, the Nissan was still running, parked in the store. Police inquiries revealed that the Nissan had been stolen from a Riccarton address, around 4pm on Sunday. Early on Friday, burglars in a stolen Subaru smashed their way into Big Save Furniture, Blenheim Rd, and stole a $7200 leather lounge suite. •Turn to page 6

IT’S GREAT to see young people putting in the hard yards to achieve their sporting goals. On page 1 today Christchurch Girls’ High School’s Hannah Bates is doing just that as she continues on her promising swimming path. In July she’s off to the Bahamas for a Commonwealth meet, which could help springboard her to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Realistically though, she is looking further ahead to the 2024 Olympics when she will be in her mid-20s and at the top of her game. The hard yards are getting up just after 5am to train for a couple of hours, off to school and then when she gets home it’s back into the pool again. There’s a quiz night in July and a givealittle page to help Hannah achieve her goals. Support them. – Barry Clarke

News Police do U-turn over bylaw By Andrew King A BYLAW to prevent loitering and anti-social behaviour around the Riccarton bus lounge may not be workable, police now say. City council staff have been instructed to investigate how a bylaw would work around the troublesome bus lounge on Riccarton Rd by the HalswellHornby-Riccarton Community Board. Ironically, the possibility of a bylaw was first raised by another Riccarton community constable Aaron Thorn in Helen a Western News Beaumont opinion article. He said his suggestion was “warmly received by the city council.” Police now appear to have done a U-turn on the bylaw issue. Since opening in 2015, the Riccarton bus lounge has been a hot-spot for trouble-causing youth, which is affecting surrounding businesses. But Senior Constable Ken Carter said the bylaw appears to be “non-workable” after discussions with the city council and a new tact is required.

“We need to be looking at the provision in the Trespass Act to see if we could extend the powers inside the bus lounge out onto the street,” he said. Currently, police have permission from the city council to trespass from the bus lounge, but Senior Constable Carter said if that extended out onto the street it might work. City council head of strategic policy Helen Beaumont said no decisions have yet been made in
regards to a bylaw, but they are considering looking into using the Trespass Act. “Staff are still in the process of preparing advice and will report back to the Halswell-HornbyRiccarton Community Board,” she said. Senior Constable Carter is a community officer in the Riccarton area and has seen the trouble that can happen at the bus lounge. “It seems to be worse during

school holidays where we have quite a few young people congregating and that leads to trouble,” he said. “They are not all bad kids, it is just that pack mentality.” Any new idea, he said, needs to not breach the Bill of Rights. “With a bylaw, we would have trouble enforcing it,” he said. Senior Constable Carter said police and city council staff will meet in June to discuss the options.

Library named: Place of many eels By Julia Evans PLACE OF many eels, ōWhatara, is the new Te Reo name for the Bishopdale Library. It’s previous name was Te Kete Wānanga o Papa Kōhatu, meaning place of many rocks. But as the old site on Farrington Ave is demolished, the city council was gifted ōWhatara for the new building, set to open in July. City council community central library manager Kate Ogden said the city council’s Ngāi Tahu partnership team asked whether it would be appropriate to continue to use the old library’s Maori name or whether the new facility should have a name more reflective of Ngāi Tahu/Ngāi Tūāhuriri history. “Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga was approached directly on our behalf and we were gifted the name ōWhatarau,” Ms Ogden said. The area was subjected to continual flooding of the old Waimairi River in pre-colonial times. “Apparently you found lots of eels there,” she said. The process is done as part of the city council’s partnership with Ngāi Tahu and the city council were not charged.

Bid to bottle Belfast water won’t benefit community FendaltonWaimairiHarewood Community Board member Aaron Campbell writes about the controversial bottling of Belfast’s water We learned last week that 4.3 million litres per day of Christchurch’s aquifer water at the former Kaputone Wool Scour site in Belfast could be sent overseas in New Zealand’s second largest bottling operation. That’s more than Riccarton residents use per day; or another way, 600 Olympic swimming pools worth of water a year. The city council is hamstrung by legislation: The Government should tighten the Resource Management Act so a consent lapses when a business folds and it shouldn’t be transferable or sold. Worryingly, Phillip Burmester, who made $3 million on the wool scour sale, now plans to build another water bottling plant next door. In 2010, the Government sacked ECan councillors and En-

vironment Minister Nick Smith said: “Allocation decisions are ad hoc, water quality is deteriorating” and “we are to water what the Saudis are to oil.” After seven years of an unaccountable ECan, is our water situation better? The RMA allows this water to be taken for 35 years and nothing is paid for the commercial use of our resource – this is privatisation by stealth. The Human Rights Commission says: “This has Treaty of Waitangi implications and affects economic, cultural and social rights, among others.” Export water has a commercial value. The Fijian Government
taxes Fiji Water 15c a litre royalty – at that rate our Government will forgo $200 million-plus per year in revenue from just Belfast. A changing climate and overallocation, mostly for irrigation to enable intensive farming, is affecting residents in our neighbouring districts at both ends of dairying, resulting in E. coli-laden, nitrogen rich soluble fertiliser leaching through our stony soils. Our city council is busy drilling deeper wells in the northwest for better water security, but still our aquifers can’t recharge quick enough, we must use our water more efficiently, both domestically and commercially.

Cassels launches new bottled beer CASSELS BOUTIQUE brewery at The Tannery has launched its new bottled beer. The Cassels and Sons Brewery’s milk stout and extra pale ale in the bottle was released at Woolston New World, Ferry Rd, on Friday, with a tasting. It marked a day of celebration for the company as it was the first time it had bottled beer and sold it at a supermarket. Woolston Business Association chairman and Woolston New World owner Greg Boock said he was approached by the brewery’s director Zak Cassels to see if they would like to be the first supermarket in the country to
launch and sell the bottled beer. “I think it’s pretty awesome that two local companies can collaborate and launch a product locally like this,” he said. Mr Cassels said the milk stout was a favourite and won a trophy at the New Zealand 2011 Brewers Guild Award. He said the extra pale ale was a relatively new beer having only been brewed for about a year. Mr Cassels said the company plans to offer the beers nationwide from September. He also said they are planning to add two more bottled beers to the range later in the year.

Eight blue gum trees near the Bishopdale Village Mall car park were given the chop yesterday. The trees were removed because of poor health and the risk they presented to the public. In November, the Bishopdale Business Association expressed concern after a tree limb fell and damaged a parked car. Teams from Burnside and Christ’s College have come out on top in Let’s Play Live League of Legends high school league and are battling their way through the play-offs. The game’s season started at the beginning of March with 50 teams from around the country competing. But only the top three from each region and an overall wildcard earned spots in the play-offs, which began last Monday. Burnside teams one and three as well as a team from Christ’s College came out top for the South Island region. Five teams were considered for the wildcard slot, with Burnside team two eventually making the cut. Competition organisers said Burnside two were chosen because it was the only team to take a win off region leader Burnside one. •Watch the video at star.kiwi

Water-saving factory A NEW manufacturing plant in Wigram will deliver a 90 per cent water saving compared to its old site in Woolston. Purpose-built by Skellerup, city council project and compliance manager Nick Steel said that water is used primarily for cooling and temperature control of the rubber processing equipment. All of the water now comes from the city water supply so it was essential to reduce consumption from previous levels. “On the old site at Woolston, the company was drawing about 550 million litres of water a year from the city water supply and two artesian wells. At Wigram, we expect to draw only 40 million litres,” Mr Steel said. He noted that the greatest savings have been achieved through a new fully-reticulated, closed chilled water system. Once the 5km of stainless steel pipes throughout the factory are full of water, the water is cooled and reused so there is no need to draw any more in. Mr Steel likens it to a cooling system in a typical motor vehicle. “Of course our plant is much larger and more complex but the underlying principle is the same. We pipe the water around as a cooling agent, then run it

through heat exchangers and refrigeration units so it can be reused.” City council head of three waters and waste John Mackie praised the company’s commitment to savings. “It’s the biggest turnaround I’ve seen. They’ve gone above and beyond what they needed to do from a compliance perspective.” Mr Mackie said any commercial user who wanted to talk about water — whether reducing consumption or waste discharge — could get in touch with the city council. “We want to help people be more efficient with water. If you’ve got a big bill, talk to the water team.”

Festival finals for Rangi musician MODERN: Emma Cawood, Emily Cox, Hermione Murden and Hannah Berrill of Selwyn House are off to the United States to compete in the future problem solving international competition.
Problem solvers off to US competition FOUR YEAR 8 pupils from Selwyn House will travel to the United States to compete in the future problem solving international competition. The girls are the national champions of future problem solving junior division after winning in Auckland late last year. Held at University of Wisconsin’s La Crosse campus, Future Problem is an international
SCHOOLS education programme that sets to develop creative, critical and caring thinking skills. Pupils will wrestle with some of the challenging issues facing modern society and work to create positive solutions. Topics include space junk, recovery from disaster and
alternative sources of energy. The girls have been training hard and researching biosecurity, the topic designated for the finals in Wisconsin. “I knew almost nothing about biosecurity before we started our research but I’m really enjoying learning in depth about
it,” said team member Emily Cox. Another team member Emma Cawood interviewed biosecurity experts in Dunedin and Invercargill during her school holidays because she has become so interested in this topic. The girls leave for the US on June 4 and are currently busy fundraising to support their travel.
RANGI RURU Girls’ School student Valerie Xiang is taking her drumming composition to Wellington for the Sheliah Winn Shakespeare Festival national finals. Valerie composed incidental music for the 15min excerpt from King Lear that the school’s senior students performed in the region. Director of Music at Rangi Ruru, Janet Kingsbury said Valerie is an outstanding academic and music scholar who has many strings to her bow. In addition to being a composer, Valerie is a percussionist in the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Symphony Orchestra, in a senior chamber music group at Rangi Ruru, a singer and piano accompanist for the senior choral group Resolutions, and plays percussion in the Rangi Sinfonia. Mrs Kingsbury said Valerie is the St Andrew’s at Rangi Ruru Organ Scholar for 2017. She played the organ as part of a concert to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the church moving to the school grounds from Hospital Corner. Valerie will travel to Wellington over Queen’s Birthday Weekend for the competition awards event.

Superstition pays off as St Thomas lift shield By Andrew King ST THOMAS’ first XI were able to put their hands on the Connetics Shield for the first time after beating close rivals Middleton 5-1 on Wednesday night. There was plenty of chat between managers before the game about who would be taking it home, but St Thomas’ captain Michael White was the one to lift what is considered to be the Ranfurly Shield of high school football. The week before the game, White had refused to touch the shield, saying he would only lay hands on it if he won it – now he can, and has.
“I am stoked to be able to lift it,” White said. Co-coach Richard Washington said it was an amazing feeling to have the shield in their cabinet, and fellow co-coach Jacob Allen has not let it out of his sight since it arrived. “We want to try to hold on to it for as long as possible but it looks like in this competition, every team can produce a quality display to win it,” Washington said. St Thomas will keep it through next week at least, as they have a bye before taking on Papanui in their first defence.

Rangi girls gear up to test their riding skills TWO RANGI Ruru students are gearing up for the Kaikoura three-day moto-trial over Queen’s Birthday weekend. Brigitte Smith and Georgina Scott, both 14, will be among the 60 riders competing in the event. Both girls rode in the event last year on 80cc motor-cycles, but this year they will be mounted on 125cc Italian Betas. They rode their new bikes in a club trial at Living Springs recently and showed they have the skills to be competitive with the male riders in their grade. They will be accompanied by their fathers, Glenn Smith and Derek Scott, who are both experienced trial riders. The Kaikoura trial will be run by the Pioneer Motorcycle Club and has been around since 1946. It is the longest running multi-day trial in Australasia. The trial will be held offroad on private land and, although two properties are unavailable this year due to the Kaikoura

SPORTS UC Championship giants meet in table-top clash FOR THE second year in a row, Christchurch Boys’ High School will meet Christ’s College in a top-of-the-table clash on Thursday. A one-sided 76-6 win over Mid-Canterbury Combined on Wednesday was table-topping CBHS’s fifth straight to start the campaign. Christ’s accounted for Aoraki Combined 41-0 on Saturday to remain in second spot on the UC Championship table. CBHS have not lost to Christ’s since 2000. Sands rides to victory in surf champs By Andrew King COLD AND windy conditions couldn’t stop a rampaging Sam Sands from taking top prize in the under-18 boys section of the Canterbury scholastic surf championships recently. The Christchurch Boys’ High student had a solid set in the final five minutes to win it from St Bede’s student Jordan Sparrow in testing conditions at New Brighton Beach. A southerly front moved through the area in the morning kicking up big waves for the riders to feast on. Thomas Harcourt, also from CBHS, placed fourth in the section.
St Bede’s had a number of competitive riders with Caspar McCormick winning the longboard section thanks to some fancy footwork, James Millar was second in the under-14 boys section and Riley Gibson fourth in the under-16 boys section. Burnside High’s Kristy McDonald was third in the girls open section and was the top-ranked under-18 rider in the competition. The event acts as a trial for the Canterbury scholastic surf team, with a training squad to be announced in June in preparation for the national scholastic surf championships in Gisborne in October.

BROCCOLI, WALNUT AND COTTAGE CHEESE PIES Ingredients 12 slices Bread 1/2 cup (8 Tbsp) Butter, melted, or olive oil, for brushing 2 Eggs 6 Tbsp Cottage cheese 3 Tbsp Walnuts, chopped ½ cup Cheddar cheese, grated 1 cup Broccoli, in small florets, steamed ½ tsp Salt Directions Make bread cases by brushing one side of each slice of bread with some melted butter or oil and pressing. Buttered side down, put in to muffin pans (if using thick bread flatten the bread out a little with your hand or a rolling pin first). Bake at 170 deg C for 20 minutes or until brown and very crisp. Take them out straight away and leave to cool on a cake rake to avoid going soggy. You can keep the bread cases in an airtight container for a few days if you are not making the pies straight away. Beat the eggs and mix through
the walnuts, cheddar, steamed broccoli, salt and a good grind of pepper. Fold in the cottage cheese. You want to keep blobs of cottage cheese through the mix. Place the bread cases back in to the muffin pans and spoon in the mixture. Bake in a 180 deg C oven for 15 minutes or until set through.

Cut some small waxy potatoes into discs (leave the skin on), brush them with oil and space them out on an oven tray. Roast them until they are just soft and nicely golden coloured. Drain the swedes (keep the poaching liquid) and puree them with the roasted garlic. Add enough of the poaching liquid to achieve a firm but smooth puree. Chiropractors offer natural solution to stress-related ailments More than six years on from the Christchurch earthquake, many residents are still suffering from stress and stressrelated ailments as a result of the event. Dr Mary Patterson Chiropractor of the Christchurch Wellness Centre in Memorial Avenue says she is continually hearing from patients about how stress is affecting their lives and their health, a lot of which can be directly linked to the earthquakes. “Stress on the body can be physical, chemical or emotional. Emotional stress can be caused through events such as the earthquakes,” Mary says. “Physical stress such as back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain and headaches, can be the result of activities such as gardening, or the result of injury from an accident. “Chemical stress can come about from not eating the right foods, or it can be from environmental causes. Chiropractic care is a natural solution that enhances the body’s natural ability to heal itself from any of these stresses.” Established in June 2016, the Christchurch Wellness Centre’s focus is on quality and results, with the services of two fully qualified chiropractors, Mary and her colleague Dr Priyanka Tuank.
